Roads

M4 near Junction 32

Transport Wales looks after 75 miles of motorway and over 1000 miles of trunk road in Wales, and each year spends around £210 million on this task.

At Transport and Strategic Regeneration, we work closely with local government and other bodies to improve and maintain roads throughout Wales.

Around £70m of our annual budget goes towards the construction of new roads or improvements to existing ones. The programme for the improvement of the trunk road and motorway system and other selected transport projects with new construction and improvement schemes over £5million in value is carried out through the employment of consulting engineers, agent authorities and contractors.

A further £40m of our annual budget goes towards the renewal of roads, bridges and other structures and £30m on general day to day maintenance, including winter maintenance.

Transport Wales assesses, mitigates and manages the environmental effects of transport projects and their subsequent use, and contributes to the Welsh Assembly Government's obligations on safeguarding the environment and its biodiversity.
