The Directorate for Economy, Science and Transport delivers the economic and transport agendas.

Transport policy, strategy and research is delivered by the Infrastructure group.

Our vision is to work together for Wales to help create a vibrant Welsh economy delivering strong and sustainable growth by providing opportunities for all and by promoting investment in more and better jobs and an improved environment for growth.

We are responsible for:

  • Transport policy of the Welsh Government
  • Maintenance and Improvement of over 1,000 miles of trunk road and 75 miles of motorway in Wales
  • Administration of grants to local authorities and other bodies to fund a range of capital transport schemes and transport projects
  • Strategic regeneration - to establish foundations that support investment in more and better jobs; strong communities and an improved environment for economic growth
  • Spending on transport and strategic regeneration is currently over £250m per year. Key areas of spending include stimulating new jobs, enabling people to access jobs on public transport and facilitating travel for both the people of Wales and visitors.

Roads and Projects Division (R&P)

R&P is responsible for:
  • Preparing, managing and implementing major transport infrastructure schemes.
  • Managing the motorway and trunk road network in Wales, maintaining and where appropriate improving the service levels it provides.
  • Manages Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), travel information, traffic signs and traffic control centres, and has responsibility for road safety.
  • Manages the network infrastructure including structures, lighting, signals and level crossings.
  • provides advice and guidance for local roads.

Integrated Transport Division (ITD)

ITD is responsible for:
  • Strategic planning and the delivery of an integrated transport system fit for the 21st century, including bus and community transport, Smarter Choices, Concessionary Bus Travel, Blue Badge Scheme, International Connectivity and Air Services.
  • Promoting sustainable rail travel and progressive regional transport planning.
  • Passenger services within Wales.
  • Managing the Wales and Borders Rail Franchise and the delivery of certain rail infrastructure projects.

Transport Planning and Governance (TP&G)

TP&G is responsible for:
  • Supporting the development of Regional Transport Plans
  • Undertaking the legal and land acquisition procedures relating to infrastructure and the maintenance of the trunk road and motorway network.
  • Providing a procurement service.
  • Providing landscape and environmental advice to the Welsh Government.
  • Administering grants for capital transport schemes and transport services and compensation for construction, maintenance and use of trunk roads.

Transport Policy Division

The Policy group are responsible for:
  • Develop and take forward transport policy in Wales
  • Support Ministers in considering the Ministerial Advisory Group’s transport report and to take forward recommendations.
  • Development of the National Transport Plan.

Strategic Regeneration

Strategic Regeneration is responsible for:
  • Developing and taking forward Strategic Regeneration Areas
  • Manage legacy regeneration schemes
  • Managing the Cardiff Bay Redevelopment arrangements
