This is the Final Report of a study of the 'Potential benefits and barriers to promoting the uptake of alternative fuels for road vehicles in Wales'.
Wales is set to play a central role in the UK wide drive to develop hydrogen technology as a clean green sustainable energy fuel of the future.
Our policies and actions to help create a sustainable, low carbon economy for Wales.

The Welsh Government is committed to promoting and encouraging the uptake of cleaner fuels and vehicles in Wales, improving air quality and reducing harmful emissions.

Alternative road transport fuels are those that are – or could be – used in the place of conventional petrol or diesel.

There are a large number of combinations of possible future fuels which can be produced from a range of different energy sources and used in different types of engines.

Promoting alternative fuels for road vehicles in Wales may provide a wide range of benefits such as:

  • Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, particularly CO2
  • Improved air quality
  • Reduced impact of noise
  • Greater sustainability
  • Improved self-sufficiency
  • Developing ‘know-how’
  • Fostering Economic development.

From here you can access the report into the benefits and barriers to promoting the uptake of alternative fuels, and the mapping study into the current position of alternative fuels' infrastructure in Wales. The aim of these reports is to help the Welsh Government develop an overall strategy to promote the take up of alternative fuels.

Under the Sustainable Development Action Plan agreed in October 2004, the Welsh Government committed to a project to "investigate the benefits and barriers to promoting the uptake of alternative fuels in Wales, such as biofuels, biogas, natural gas and hydrogen."
