The ecological footprint is one of Welsh Assembly Government's five headline indicators of sustainable development in Wales. This report recalculates Wales' ecological footprint using 2003 data.

This report also calculates the ecological footprint for the six Spatial Plan areas and for each of the 22 local authorities in Wales.

The report shows how the ecological footprint may change over time. The scenarios created give possible footprint routes from 2001 to 2020. These scenarios are designed to show the potential footprint reduction of:

  • Policies in place today;
  • Policies planned for the near future; and
  • Further policies that could be put in place on a national scale.
