Research and development

The business enterprise research and development (R&D) survey is an annual survey that estimates the expenditure on R&D by businesses in the UK. Data are available broken down by industry and English region and UK country.

Other surveys which consider government expenditure on R&D and higher education expenditure on R&D give rise to overall total R&D activity at both the regional and UK level. Note that UK totals also include the contribution made by private non-profit organisations, which is not disaggregated by English region or UK country.
