Schools Census 2008, provisional results
The latest National Statistics on the Annual Schools Census produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 7 August 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Statistics on schools, teachers and pupils include data for Wales at January 2008. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 5 December 2007.
The Release

The key points from the latest release (compared to January 2007) are:
- 23 fewer schools and 10 more pupil referral units;
- 5,000 fewer pupils;
- 185 less teachers (full time equivalent);
- 1,100 additional support staff;
- pupil-teacher ratio is 17.5
- overall average class size in primary schools stayed the same at 24.2 (note that these figures are not directly comparable with those collected in September to monitor the Assembly's targets).
In 2008, data on ethnic background and national identity showed that:
- 94 per cent of pupils consider themselves to be of white ethnic background;
- 56 per cent consider their national identity to be Welsh.
