The latest statistical bulletin on Welsh in Higher Education produced by the Welsh Assembly Government was released on 17 June 2007 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

National Statistics KitemarkThis Bulletin provides information about students enrolled at Welsh higher education institutions (HEIs) taught through the medium of Welsh and staff teaching through the medium of Welsh up to the 2006/07 academic year. The bulletin updates the statistics previously released on 28 June  2007.  The data included here are taken from the Higher Education Statistics Agency's (HESA) Student and Staff Records.

The key points from the latest release are:

2006/07 Summary

  • There were 4,080 student enrolments at Welsh HEIs with some teaching through the medium of Welsh, 4.4 per cent greater than the number in 2005/06 (3,910).
  • 3.1 per cent of student enrolments at Welsh HEIs had some teaching through the medium of Welsh, compared with 3.0 per cent in 2005/06.
  • In 2006/07 there were 3,760 Welsh domiciled students at Welsh HEIs with some teaching through the medium of Welsh, an increase of 3.9 per cent compared with 2005/06 (3,615).
  • There were 595 academic staff able to teach through the medium of Welsh and 425 academic staff teaching through the medium of Welsh.
