Student Support for Higher Education in England and Wales: Academic Year 2005/06 (Provisional)

On 29 November 2005, the Student Loans Company (SLC), in consultation with the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), published final 2004/05 academic year data and provisional 2005/06 data on higher education student support in England and Wales.

The Statistical Release presents information on student loans and fee support and provides a separate breakdown for English and Welsh domiciled students for the first time.

The average value of loan was initially calculated on rounded data. This has been corrected to show the 'average value of loan' based on detailed data. The data were republished by SLC on 5th January 2006

Key results for Welsh domiciled students are:

  • In 2004/05, the proportion of higher education students who were assessed to make no contribution towards their tuition fees was 47 per cent; in addition, 15% made a partial contribution towards their fees, and 38 per cent made a full contribution towards their fees.
  • The number of student support scheme students eligible for support in Wales was 47,000 in 2004/05.
  • The average income contingent loan for Welsh domiciled students was £3,410 in 2004/05. The average for those who have applied so far in 2005/06 is £3,530. (Note: these figures were revised January 2006).
  • 80 per cent of eligible students took out a student loan in 2004/05 (this is provisional).
