Welsh Local Government Financial Statistics, 2008
The latest National Statistics on Welsh Local Government Finance 2008 produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 25 September 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Statistics on Local Government Finance include data for Wales for the period 2006-07 outturn and budgets for 2007-08 and 2008-09.

The key points from the latest release are:
2006-07 outturn
- Gross revenue expenditure, including spending financed by specific grants, stood at £6,472 million or £2,182 per head of population.
- Capital expenditure was £1,077 million, of which £267 million was expenditure on housing and £186 million was expenditure on education.
2008-09 budget
- Local authorities budgeted to spend £2,354 per head of population or £6,983 million.
- Provision for education services accounted for 34% of the total budgeted gross revenue expenditure, social services for 19%, whilst police and fire services accounted for a further 9% and 2% respectively.
- Local authorities forecast capital expenditure to be £983 million in 2008-09.
- The total number of dwellings liable for council tax in Wales in 2008-09 was 1,308,620. The average band D council tax across Wales for 2008-09 was £1,044, a rise of 3.9% over 2007-08.
- By 31 March 2007, councils had collected an estimated 97% of all council tax due for 2007-08, which was 100% of the amount budgeted to be collected.
