The latest National Statistics on new house building produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 10 September 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on the number of new dwellings started and completed include data for Wales for the period April to June 2008, as reported by local authorities. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 11 June 2008. This information is based on the reports of local authority building inspectors and the National House Building Council (NHBC). It does not include information from private approved inspectors.

Starts

  • During the April to June quarter 2008 there were 1,926 new dwellings started, the lowest recorded level in that quarter since 1984.
  • The number of starts has increased by 110 (6 per cent) from the previous quarter and decreased by 1,051 (35 per cent) from the same quarter of the previous year.
  • The private sector accounted for 1,838 of new dwellings started, some 95 per cent of all activity. Of the remaining dwellings, 80 were started by registered social landlords and 8 by local authorities.
  • During the quarter, the highest number of starts across all tenures were seen in Cardiff and Newport , whilst Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil saw the lowest number of starts.

Completions

  • 2,159 dwellings were completed during the April to June 2008 quarter.
  • The number of completions increased by 339 (19 per cent) from the previous quarter and decreased by 416 (16 per cent) from the same quarter of the previous year.
  • 1,990 dwellings (92 per cent) were completed by the private sector. The remaining 169 dwellings were completed by registered social landlords. There were no dwellings completed by local authorities.
  • The highest number of dwelling completions, across all tenures, were seen in Cardiff and Swansea whilst the lowest were seen in Blaenau Gwent and Denbighshire.
