NHS Direct in Wales Update, Quarter Ending December 2011

The latest statistics on calls to NHS Direct Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 1 February 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS Direct Wales include data for Wales for the quarter up to the end of December 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 2 November 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • 79,800 calls were made to NHS Direct Wales, 18 per cent down on the October to December quarter in 2010;
  • 65,400 calls were answered, 12.7 per cent down on the October to December quarter in 2010;
  • More than 10,200 calls were transferred to NHS Direct Wales, from the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, for clinical triage;
  • 440 calls were answered (out of 700 made) from callers expressing a preference for the call to be taken in Welsh (less than 1 per cent of all calls answered);
  • Nearly 250,000 visits were made to the NHS Direct Wales website, 82 per cent up on the October to December quarter in 2010; and
  • 626 on-line enquiries were made to the web-based enquiry service, almost 25 per cent more than the number (502) in the October to December quarter in 2010.
