The latest National Statistics on social services staff produced by the Local Government Data Unit~Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 15 October 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The statistics include numbers of staff employed by local authorities in Wales at 31 March 2008. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 26 September 2007.

Key points from the latest release are:

  • The whole-time equivalent (w.t.e) number of staff employed at 31 March 2008 was 20,241, a decrease of 1% compared to March 2007.
  • Social work services and home care services staff increased by 1% and 5% respectively, while residential services staff decreased by 7%. Day services staff decreased by 1% while central management and other staff fell by 3%.
  • The percentage of staff that hold a required or recommended qualification increased from 44% at 31 March 2007 to 53% at 31 March 2008.
