The latest National Statistics on teenage conceptions produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 8 October 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on teenage conceptions include data for England and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2006. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 13 December 2007.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Conception rates for girls aged under 16 decreased every year between 1999 and 2004 but increased to 8.6 per thousand girls aged 13-15 in 2006.
  • Conception rates for girls aged under 18 increased from 43.6 per thousand girls aged 15-17 in 2005 to 44.9 in 2006.
  • The conception rate for females aged under 20 increased from 63.1 per thousand females aged 15-19 in 2005 to 64.5 in 2006.
  • In 2006 the percentage of conceptions in Wales terminated by abortion was 53 per cent for the under 16s, 43 per cent for the under 18s and 36 per cent for the under 20s. The percentage for women of all ages was 20 per cent.
