The latest National Statistics on GP prescribing produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 19 August 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

National Statistics Kitemark Statistics on GP prescribing include data for the financial year 2007-08.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 15 August 2007.

The key points from the latest release are:

Wales in 2007-08:-

  • The number of prescription items dispensed increased from 59.1 million in 2006-07 to 62.0 million (up by 5 per cent). This was equivalent to 20.0 per head of population registered with a GP in Wales.
  • The net ingredient cost of all prescriptions dispensed increased by 1 per cent over 2006-07, to £584 million. This was equivalent to £188.90 per head.
  • The average net ingredient cost per prescription item was £9.42; 38 pence lower than in 2006-07.
