NHS Wales Cancer Waiting Times: Quarter Ending 31 December 2006

This statistical release shows information on meeting certain National Cancer Standards set for the NHS in Wales, which are part of the 2006-07 Service and Financial Framework targets.

For patients starting treatment during the quarter ending 31 December 2006

Percentage of patients newly diagnosed with cancer via the Urgent Suspected Cancer route who started definitive treatment within two months of referral:

  • 100% of patients with acute leukaemia
  • No patients were referred with cancer of the brain/CNS.
  • 96% of patients with breast cancer
  • 71% of patients with gynaecological cancer
  • 81% of patients with haematological cancer
  • 66% of patients with cancer of the head and neck
  • 78% of patients with lower gastrointestinal cancer
  • 78% of patients with lung cancer
  • 50% of patients with sarcoma cancer
  • 87% of patients with skin cancer
  • 73% of patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer
  • 52% of patients with urological cancer
  • 80% of patients with cancer at other tumour sites
  • 100% of children with cancer

Percentage of patients newly diagnosed with cancer not via the Urgent Suspected Cancer route who started definitive treatment within one month of diagnosis:

  • 100% of patients with acute leukaemia
  • 100% of patients with brain/CNS cancer
  • 98% of patients with breast cancer
  • 93% of patients with gynaecological cancer
  • 99% of patients with haematological cancer
  • 92% of patients with cancer of the head and neck
  • 97% of patients with lower gastrointestinal cancer
  • 97% of patients with lung cancer
  • 89% of patients with sarcoma cancer
  • 91% of patients with skin cancer
  • 98% of patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer
  • 89% of patients with urological cancer
  • 97% of patients with cancer at other tumour sites
  • 100% of children with cancer

Note: For some cancer tumour sites the total number of patients starting treatment within the quarter is small. Care should be taken when interpreting percentages based on small numbers of patients.
