The latest National Statistics on municipal waste produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 30 October 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The release includes information about the amount of municipal waste collected from household and non-household sources and the levels of recycling in Wales. The information presented relates to 2007-08, together with figures for previous years.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total amount of municipal waste (excluding abandoned vehicles) produced in Wales has continued to fall over the last 3 years, with just under 1.8 million tonnes produced in 2007-08.
  • The proportion of municipal waste (excluding abandoned vehicles) recycled or composted in Wales has been continually increasing since 2000-01. In fact the proportion more than tripled to 33.4 per cent in 2007-08.
  • Whilst landfill is still the main form of management of municipal waste, the use of landfill sites has been steadily decreasing over the last 6 years.
