Annual Population Survey, 2007

The latest Annual Population Survey (APS) results cover calendar year 2007.  The APS combines the boosted samples of the Labour Force Survey and provides rolling four-quarter labour market data for UK countries and regions and also for local areas.  For Wales, the APS consists of a sample of about 20,000 households every year.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 27 March 2008.

The key labour market results from the latest release are:

• The working age employment rate in West Wales and the Valleys in 2007 was 69.7 per cent, whilst that for East Wales was 73.5 per cent (Wales: 71.1 per cent, UK: 74.3 per cent).
• In West Wales and the Valleys, the employment rate was up 2.6 percentage points on 2001.  In East Wales it was up 0.5 percentage points. (Wales up 1.9 percentage points and UK up 0.1 percentage points).
