Survey of Agriculture & Horticulture, June 2008

These statistics provide estimates for key variables across Wales as a whole.  Equivalent statistics for each of the other UK countries are produced by the respective administrations and are detailed in the release.  Data for the UK as a whole will be published by DEFRA in December 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

• The number of sheep and lambs fell by 5 per cent between June 2007 and June 2008.  The current total is 8.5 million.
• The total number of cattle and calves fell by 2 per cent between June 2007 and June 2008. This was reflected among both dairy breed and non-dairy breeds.
• The overall area of agricultural land in Wales remained almost unchanged at 1.6 million hectares in June 2007.
