Community safety

Female Community Support Officer.

We want our communities to be places where people feel safe to live and work now and in the future. Achieving this means building on Wales' strong tradition of community identity and self-help.

Tackling crime and the fear of crime is an important way to help people feel safer in their communities. We are working with the police, Home Office, Community Safety Partnerships and other key organisations to reduce crime and the fear of crime.

Issues such as substance misuse and domestic abuse can cause problems for individuals and our communities, stopping people from feeling safe. For instance substance misuse is strongly linked to crime, particularly violent crime and disorder.  We are aggressively tackling these problems through education, prevention and the provision of quality support for those affected.

Fire and its consequences are a threat to our safety. Accidental fires can strike where people often feel safest, in their home. Arson is a crime, affecting communities by destroying property and our environment and costing businesses money. Together with the Fire and Rescue Service in Wales we are working to reduce the numbers of fire-related deaths and injuries and to protect our communities from accidental fires and arson.
