The Welsh Housing Quality Standard requires all social landlords to improve their housing stock to an acceptable level by 2012.

We believe that everyone in Wales should have the opportunity to live in a good quality home within a safe and secure community. To help achieve this aim we published the Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS).

This standard requires all social landlords to improve their housing stock to an acceptable level by 2012 or by agreement with Welsh Ministers. It is intended to help social landlords assess their housing stock. Separate guidance has been issued to Registered Social Landlords' and local authorities.

By the end of 2012 landlords should have:

  • reviewed and monitored the programme as a part of the business planning process
  • confirmed that all of their housing stock meets the WHQS.

The WHQS is seeking to achieve more than just an improvement in the condition of social housing stock. It also aims to bring wider benefits by integrating social, environmental and economic concerns.

The Standard will ensure that dwellings are of good quality and suitable for the needs of existing and future residents.
