Housing

Houses.

The quality of people’s homes is critical to the quality of their lives. Homes are a cornerstone of the strong, safe communities we wish to see throughout Wales.

We want to offer people affordable housing choices in both the private and social sectors. Our work will help to tackle the problems of homelessness, address the needs of older people and those with disabilities and ensure that no one is denied the opportunity to live in a good home.

Housing can also be a concern for those dealing with domestic violence or substance misuse. We plan to develop support and advice services that help people with their specific housing needs.

In order to drive forward the work of eliminating unfit housing in Wales we have introduced a standard called the Welsh Housing Quality Standard. We want all social housing to meet this standard by 2012.

During the last 20 years, levels of unfit housing in Wales have fallen from some 20% of total housing stock total to around 4%. The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to ensuring that this trend continues.
