In Wales: improving health

Health Challenge Wales is the national focus of efforts to improve health and well being by encouraging people to take responsibility for their own health. It recognises that to create a healthier nation, economic, social and environmental factors need to be considered.

Individuals employed by businesses and organisations committed to the principles of the Corporate Health Standard will therefore have the knowledge and environment that empowers them to improve their own health.

'Designed for Life' outlines a defined vision that: 'by 2015, through the efforts of the Welsh Government, the NHS, Local Authorities (LAs)and their partners, the community and individuals, Wales will have minimised avoidable death, pain, delays, helplessness and waste.' The design philosophy suggests that every avenue is used to promote healthy communities and individuals are empowered to take responsibility for their own health.

All NHS Trusts and LA's have been challenged to achieve a gold/platinum award by 2008.
