Flood and Coastal Risk Management in Wales

Flooded house

The Welsh Assembly Government is responsible for developing flood and coastal risk management policy in Wales and largely funds flood and coastal activities undertaken by operating authorities across Wales.

Flooding is an important issue for Wales and one which the Welsh Assembly Government takes very seriously.  It is a constant but unpredictable threat that can occur at any time during the year, although the risk of flooding is greatest during the period October to March.

Around 500,000 people and 170,000 properties are at risk of flooding in Wales.  Changes in our climate, such as more severe storms and wetter summers and winters, will increase the risk of flooding.  Therefore, there is a greater chance that flood defences and drainage systems alone will not prevent flooding.

Defence against flooding will grow greater in significance as time progresses and is currently one of our most significant challenges. Where properties are protected by flood defences the risk of flooding is reduced but can never be eliminated.

We need to ensure our future systems operate effectively when they are required to and also have preparations when those systems are beaten.
