Guidance on the employment based teacher training scheme - the Graduate Teacher Programme and the Registered Teacher Programme

This document provides guidance on employment based routes into teaching that lead to the gaining of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). All employment based routes are now in operation by virtue of the employment based teacher training scheme (“the Scheme”) which has been made by the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning under Regulation 8 of the Education (School Teachers’ Qualifications) (Wales) Regulations 2004. Under paragraph (5) of that regulation 8 those exercising functions under the Scheme must have regard to this guidance.

This guidance should be read in conjunction with the Scheme. A copy of the Scheme is at Annex A.

The Scheme came into operation on 1 September 2004 and currently covers two routes - the graduate Teacher Programme and the Registered Teacher Programme. Both these programmes were in operation prior to the Scheme.
