Evaluating the Foundation Phase

A three-year independent evaluation of the Foundation Phase is currently being conducted.

We have appointed Cardiff University in conjunction with the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) to take forward the evaluation.

The evaluation will consider:

  • how the Foundation Phase is being implemented
  • suggest ways in which improvements can be made
  • what impact the Foundation Phase is having
  • value for money
  • tracking the future impact of the Foundation Phase.

In order to do this, the evaluation team will require the input and support of Foundation Phase settings and their practitioners.

Have your say

A postal survey will be sent to all Foundation Phase settings during the summer term. In addition to this, towards the end of 2012 approximately forty randomly selected settings will be approached to become an evaluation case study. Should you be selected and agree to take part, the evaluation team will visit you in your setting and explore the day-to-day reality of the Foundation Phase from the perspective of the practitioners, children and parents.

The evaluation is receiving advice and guidance from the All Wales Foundation Phase Advisors (AWFPA), Estyn, headteachers and practitioners amongst others.

We hope that you will engage with the evaluation and that you find it an enjoyable and rewarding experience. You can find out more about the evaluation by visiting the WISERD website
