Further funding for domestic abuse charities

A total of 18 organisations that support domestic abuse victims in Wales will benefit from an additional £2.5 million of Welsh Assembly Government funding, Social Justice Minister Carl Sargeant announced today [Monday 20 December].

Organisations across the country will use the funding to provide facilities and support services for domestic abuse victims and their children, particularly at a local level.

This latest funding is in addition to the £4.3 million already spent on domestic abuse support services over the past year.

As part of the funding domestic abuse victims in Gwynedd could have security alarms and other safety devises installed in their homes, allowing them to remain at home rather than seek refuge elsewhere. Organisations in Anglesey and the Vale of Glamorgan will use the funding to run perpetrator programmes to rehabilitate offenders and help them rebuild their family life.

Announcing the funding, Wales’ Social Justice Minister Carl Sargeant said:

“Domestic abuse affects all members of the family, from the person on the receiving end to the children who witness violent behaviour. No-one should feel threatened or scared in their own home and I am committed to supporting victims in everyway that I can.

“These organisations work tirelessly to take victims out of harms way and help them to rebuild their lives. Their work is inspiring with so many innovative approaches to tackling domestic abuse, such as installing safety devises which allow victims to live in safety in the comfort of their own home.

“Last month I pledged to protect the domestic abuse budget for the next financial year. This additional funding goes that extra mile to ensure that the service providers have what they need help victims get on the road to recovery to rebuild their lives.”

Under this latest funding announcement, the Welsh Assembly Government has committed an additional £2,538,217 for domestic abuse support organisations over 2010-11.
