A total of 48 post offices across Wales will share over £695,000 of Welsh Assembly Government funding to expand their businesses and provide new services for the community.
This latest round has helped to create a new bakery at Efail Isaf Post Office in Pontypridd, a digital media centre in Cilfynydd Post Office in the Cynon Valley and a fish and chip shop at Bettws Post Office in Bridgend.
Carl Sargeant said,
“The local post office is no longer simply a place to buy stamps, pay your bills or post letters. Sub-postmasters and mistresses across Wales are diversifying their business to provide a much wider range of services.
“You may not expect to find many of these services in a post office but expanding the range of products on sale is a great way of getting more customers through the door to help sustain the business.
“These grants are helping our post offices to survive and I am delighted that another 48 have benefited from Assembly Government funding.”
Grants under the Post Office Diversification Fund can be used to develop the retail side of the business, helping post offices to become more sustainable through maintaining their current business whilst expanding into new product lines and services.
Around 180 post offices throughout Wales have already benefited from the fund, creating 169 jobs. This latest funding round will help a further 48 Post Offices and create the equivalent of 16.5 full time jobs.
Supporting Welsh post offices through the Post Office Diversification Fund is key Welsh Assembly Government priority under the One Wales agreement.
