The officers will work alongside British Transport Police (BTP) to help tackle crime on the railways. Of the 18 British Transport Police CSOs that have graduated, 12 will be deployed at Cardiff and six at Bangor.
The Minister also met with Chief Inspector Sandra England who explained the role the CSOs will play in working closely with British Transport Police’s partners such as train operating companies and Network Rail in making the railway environment safer for both passengers and staff.
Carl Sargeant said:
"As part of our Programme for Government we have committed to fund an additional 500 CSOs to be in post across Wales by 2013.
"The CSOs will be a valuable and visible addition to existing police resources, engaging with local residents and community organisations and providing support and reassurance.
"The rail network plays an important part in linking our communities in Wales. The CSOs I met with recently will support the British Transport Police in helping to reduce anti-social behaviour, disruption and crime on our railways.
"CSOs are not a replacement for warranted police officers, they are there to complement and support existing police resources. I am pleased that the Welsh Government is able to support policing in Wales particularly at a time when police forces face significant cuts from the UK Government which will inevitably affect front-line policing."
Chief Inspector Sandra England said:
"The additional Community Support Officers will provide enhanced visibility and reassurance across the rail network in Wales. They are at the core of our local policing teams dealing with the issues within our community delivering a service that helps make the rail network a safe environment."
