Government cannot directly intervene in setting the price of milk. However the Deputy Minister remains fully engaged on the issues at UK and European Government levels and with the industry.
The Deputy Minister, Alun Davies, said:
"Recent cuts in the price producers receive for their milk are of concern to me and the rest of the Welsh Government, and we are committed to supporting the sector in any way we can.
"The dairy sector is key to the future of Welsh agriculture and important to the wider Welsh economy. My engagement with the industry has been informing my decisions on how best to use the mechanisms available to me to deliver targeted specific support for improvements in the operation of the dairy supply chain. .
"Tonight, I will speak to dairy farmers to listen to their individual concerns and issues. Along with other UK Agriculture Ministers my preference would be for the industry’s co-operation in drawing up a voluntary code of practice on milk supply contracts. Should this not be established, I will not hesitate to take forward the options available to us in Wales regarding the legislation needed to implement the EU Dairy package.
"The Welsh Government has taken both a practical and a far-sighted approach to ensuring that the Welsh dairy industry emerges from the current difficulties in a stronger position to succeed in the future. "
