“The Commonwealth Games have been the culmination of many years of hard work for our athletes and their performances have made the whole country proud,” he said.

“I would like to congratulate all our athletes and support staff for their medal haul and giving their best in representing Wales. I am particularly impressed at the young age of some of our medallists, which promises much for the future, and that we managed to achieve success across a range of sports.

"These games are very important for Wales because it is the only opportunity our athletes will have to represent their country in a multi-sport event.

"I look forward to meeting the team on their return and thanking them for their efforts in person.”

Mr Jones added:

“Earlier this year, Sport Wales published their strategy for elite sport in Wales with some ambitious targets and the performance in Delhi provides a solid base to build upon. I am looking forward to celebrating even more Welsh success over the coming years including at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.”
