The young Welsh side showed steel to come from behind Scotland to claim the trophy. Their success followed wins against Serbia and Ireland to qualify for the final.
Alun Ffred Jones said:
“The spirit and endeavour shown by the Welsh team in claiming the trophy was great to see, their passing was crisp, and they showed great character and guile to overcome difficult physical opponents.”
“I would like to warmly congratulation the players and the coach, Iestyn Harries and the rest of his coaching team on this success. To win the European Cup with a young team is an achievement that augurs well for the future.”
The Minister also met a group of local school children from the Bridgend area, who have been taking part in schools programmes organised by the Wales Rugby League (WRL), and have received rugby league coaching from staff from WRL and the Celtic Crusaders rugby league team.
