We are developing a world-class transport system to provide safe, affordable and sustainable transport for all.
Train at station
Over the last 5 years there has been major investment by the Assembly in supporting local authorities to work towards delivering an integrated transport system for Wales.

£300 million was invested over a 5 year period to support rail infrastructure improvements, to invest further in integrated transport schemes and to increase funds made available for councils’ Safe Route to Schools initiatives.

Some examples of how we have invested  the money are:

  • Re-opening of the Vale of Glamorgan line to passenger traffic, with new stations at Llantwit Major and Rhoose and the opportunity to serve Cardiff International Airport from the Rhoose station.
  • Improving interchange facilities at Ammanford and Llandovery stations on the Heart of Wales line and provision of information points at stations.
  • Making capacity enhancements and providing new stations and bus/rail interchanges across the country.

More recently we have invested money, sometimes via grants to local authorities or working in partnership with other organisations, in:

  • Free travel for disabled across Wales.
  • Free bus passes for the 0ver 60s.
  • Enhancing safety and security for rail users and staff across Wales.
  • Continuing to invest in improving Wales' transport infrastructure and to promoting  sustainable transport, supporting cycling and walking initiatives and the Safe Route to Schools initiative.
