New Welsh Language Strategy: have your say

We are currently reviewing our Welsh Language strategy, 'Iaith Pawb', which was published in 2003. We invite you to send us your ideas about the new strategy.
Start of consultation: 15/10/2009
End of consultation: 29/01/2010

The review is needed because:

  • there have been changes and developments since Iaith Pawb was published
  • we are also preparing a Welsh Medium Education Strategy and seeking legislative competence over the Welsh Language.

Key issues

The future of the language was discussed in a public forum organised by the Welsh Assembly Government, and attended by the Minister for Heritage, at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in Bala in August.

Officials have discussed Iaith Pawb, and the key issues that should form part of a future Welsh Language strategy, with the Welsh Language Board and organisations working to promote the use of the language.

And now we want your views.

Core principles

In addition, the Minister for Heritage has outlined a number of core principles for the strategy. These are:

  • the need to focus effort and resources on activities that will make the biggest difference with regard to the use of Welsh
  • the need to set and monitor realistic targets and be clear where responsibility lies for achieving each target
  • the need for future policy development to be evidence-based.
