The cycling incident that occurred on 8 January 2006 on the A547 near Abergele which resulted in the loss of four lives has had a major affect on those involved in the tragedy.  The Assembly Government’s sympathy remains with the families of the deceased.

Last month the jury delivered a narrative verdict at the end of the three-week hearing.  I understand that the Coroner, John Hughes has made recommendations, but the official report is still awaited from the Coroner’s office.  Inevitably there will be lessons to be learnt from this tragedy and the County Surveyor’s Society has already set up a working group to review the procedures and protocols involved in cross boundary issues within local authorities and this includes the role of the Police in these situations.

I can confirm that Assembly Government officials will continue to work closely with the County Surveyors Society to ensure that any outcomes from the review are considered in relation to the trunk road network.
